SERBIAN CHURCH REFUSED TO PARTICIPATE IN CONSTANTINOPLE’S CELEBRATION OF 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF SERBIAN AUTOCEPHALY

Belgrade, October 16, 2019

327503.p.jpg?mtime=1571231782

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which has been festively celebrated both in Serbia and abroad where there are Serbian parishes.

However, the consequences of the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s actions in Ukraine continue to reverberate devastatingly throughout the Church, beyond Ukraine and Russia, and the Serbian Church’s celebrations were not as festive as would be expected for such a momentous anniversary.

The Serbian hierarchs decided months ago not to officially invite delegations from the other Local Orthodox Churches to the celebrations, so as to avoid the awkward situation where Moscow and Constantinople representatives would not be able to serve together or where only one of the two would be invited.

And, according to a source within the Serbian Church, the Serbian hierarchs also recently refused to send a delegation to the celebration of their autocephaly that Constantinople offered to host, due to their strong stance against Patriarch Bartholomew’s invasion of the canonical territory of the Ukrainian Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.

The Serbian Church has drawn the Patriarch of Constantinople’s ire due to its refusal to recognize the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” created by Constantinople last year.

Asked how Pat. Bartholomew responded to the refusal to attend celebrations in Istanbul, the source stated: “So far with silence. But our Serbian bishops know that’s not the end.”

Now there is serious talk and worry among the Serbian hierarchs that Pat. Bartholomew will try to take back Kosovo and other Serbian Church territories that were added after 1879, when the Patriarchate of Constantinople issued a new tomos of autocephaly for the Metropolitanate of Belgrade, which was limited to only a part of modern-day Serbia.

Recall that the Holy Synod of Constantinople suddenly decided last October to revoke the 1686 document that transferred the Kiev Metropolis to the Russian Church, thus claiming all of Ukraine for itself, though, it must be noted that the boundaries of the Kiev Metropolis in 1686 do not correspond to modern-day Ukraine. This is a glaring issue that Constantinople has never addressed.

Thus, there is a growing fear among the Serbian hierarchs that Pat. Bartholomew will turn his gaze to them next.

The hierarchs of the “Macedonian Orthodox Church,” a major schism from the Serbian Church, openly declare that they want to receive a tomos of autocephaly from Constantinople and are quite certain that it will happen. The much smaller schismatic “Montenegrin Orthodox Church” is also seeking autocephaly from Constantinople, though Pat. Bartholomew has declared that they will not receive a tomos.

However, as the world has seen with the Ukrainian situation, Pat. Bartholomew is not above changing his mind on such major issues.

The decision of the Hierarchy on Ukrainian autocephaly issue

Oct 12, 2019 | 17:41

The decision of the Hierarchy on Ukrainian autocephaly issue

in Carousel Front Page, Church of Greece

During the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece said that the proclamation of the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine is beneficial to the Orthodox Church. As a result, it will strengthen “the relations of the two Sister Churches, the one of Russia and the one of Ukraine.”

The autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine was the only issue on the agenda of today’s extraordinary meeting. Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece was the rapporteur.

The Archbishop first mentioned that the Standing Holy Synod had been examining the Ukrainian autocephaly issue in detail in several sessions. He referred to the competent Synodical Committees, that on Doctrinal and Nomocanonical Matters and that on Inter-Orthodox and Inter-Christian Relations, in order to jointly make a recommendation to the Holy Synod.

On August 13, the said committees submitted to the Chief Secretary the joint decision and recommendation entitled “The question of canonical jurisdiction in the Holy Metropolis of Kiev.”

The opinion of the committees was the following: “In the light of the above considerations, on the issue of the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine we recommend, canonically and legally, that we do not oppose the recognition of the Church of Ukraine and the autocephaly as well as its coexistence with the Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.”

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece then noted that the Church of Ukraine had always remained under the canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which had resigned from its canonical jurisdiction to join the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches. He added that the Patriarchate of Moscow deemed the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine non-canonical as if it canonically belonged to it.

He said that the proclamation of the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine was beneficial to the Orthodox Church. As a result, it will strengthen “the relations of the two Sister Churches, the one of Russia and the one of Ukraine. Finally, he recommended “the recognition of the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine of the Independent Republic of Ukraine.”

After a discussion among the members of the Hierarchy, they decided to accept the decision of the Standing Holy Synod and the recommendation of Archbishop Ieronymos. He recognised “the canonical right of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to grant autocephaly as well as the privilege of the Head of the Church of Greece to further deal with the issue of recognition of the Church of Ukraine.” Lastly, seven Metropolitans demanded the postponement of the present decision.

METROPOLITANS SERAPHIM OF PIRAEUS AND KYTHIRA SAY NO VOTE HAPPENED, NO RECOGNITION OF OCU

Athens, October 14, 2019

While media reports have stated that the Bishops’ Council of the Greek Church resolved to recognize the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” on Saturday, drawing on Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos’ statements to the press, two prominent hierarchs of the Greek Church say this is not true.

Both Metropolitans Seraphim of Piraeus and Seraphim of Kythira, both of whom have addressed the Ukrainian issue several times before, have issued statements in the wake of Saturday’s session, stating that the issue of recognizing the OCU was not put to a vote and that the hierarchs simply reaffirmed the Holy Synod’s earlier decision.

In August, the Holy Synod of the Greek Church “recognize[d] the Ecumenical Patriarch’s canonical right to issue the status of Autocephaly,” though as OrthoChristian wrote at that time, it was unclear if the Synod was speaking of Constantinople’s rights in general or specifically in the Ukrainian situation.

The Synod also recognized “the privilege of the primate of the Church of Greece to further deal with the question of recognition of the Church of Ukraine.”

According to both Seraphims, these recognitions were affirmed by the Bishops’ Council, and nothing more.

In fact, as Met. Seraphim of Kythira emphasizes, Metropolitan Daniel of Kaisariani pushed for a vote to take place, but that did not happen. But, he writes, decisions are made in the Orthodox Church by a vote, so if there was no vote, how could there have been a decision?

Therefore, he laments that spin was immediately put on the Council’s proceedings, and that Met. Hierotheos told the press that the Council’s decisions imply that the Greek Church has recognized the OCU.

Of course, the news spread quickly throughout the Orthodox world, and hierarchs from several Local Churches have already offered formal and informal reactions to the supposed decision of the Greek Church.

While Abp. Ieronymos recommended recognizing the OCU, Met. Seraphim of Kythira argues that the authorization of Abp. Ieronymos to handle the issue further is open to interpretation. Will the matter simply be settled by Abp. Ieronymos concelebrating with or commemorating Epiphany Dumenko in the Liturgy?

Met. Seraphim asks: With this privilege, will Abp. Ieronymos manage, wisely and prudently, the burning canonical and ecclesiological issue which has arisen such that it will be solved in a conciliar and canonical manner with the other primates, or he will proceed to solve it on his own?

Moreover, Met. Seraphim of Kythira writes that the media’s confused reports of only 7 metropolitans standing against recognition of the OCU were a great mistake, one he hopes that was made unintentionally. In fact, he writes, many hierarchs are against it. A few openly spoke against it, while others did not feel the need to repeat what was said by others, the hierarch of Kythira writes. He notes that there are hierarchs from the “New Lands,” which are officially within the jurisdiction of Constantinople, who also oppose autocephaly for the OCU, but who did not speak up because they do not want their view to become public.

In particular, Met. Seraphim of Kythira notes that Met. Seraphim of Piraeus went deeply into the issue, exploring it from a canonical and ecclesiological perspective.

The Metropolitan of Kythira concludes with his own position on that matter, that the hierarchs have totally ignored a letter that came to them from His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, the primate of the canonical Ukrainian Church, and they have ignored the fact that the Patriarch of Constantinople cannot receive a petition from another Local Church.

This second point is also made by Met. Seraphim of Piraeus, as he has before, emphasizing that all of Constantinople’s actions in Ukraine are illegitimate because they were made outside of its own canonical territory and beyond its canonical rights. Only an Ecumenical Council can make such decisions, the hierarch of Piraeus writes.

Met. Seraphim of Kythira ends by calling upon the Archbishop and the Patriarch to avoid any other actions and to wait for a pan-Orthodox decision.

Moreover, a source within the Greek Church also told RIA-Novosti that the hierarchs’ decision does not mean recognition of the OCU, as there was no vote directly on recognition. He says, instead, that will come only when Abp. Ieronymos begins to commemorate Epiphany Dumenko at the Liturgy.

“Everything that is being written right now is aimed at serving the interests of, and is mobilized to promote the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate,” the source said.

In his opinion, the position of certain hierarchs who are advocating for recognition of the OCU’s autocephaly, such as Met. Hierotheos (Vlachos), who immediately portrayed the Council’s decisions as a recognition of the OCU, do so because of their desire to take up the primatial throne.

The source also said that the recognition of the OCU will lead to a schism in the Greek Church, and he expressed the hope that the Russian Church will not rush to make a decision until the situation is fully clarified.

Holy Synod rebutted the statement of Metropolitan of Kythira on Ukrainian issue

Oct 16, 2019 | 10:18

In an announcement issued by the Synodical Committee on Press, Public Relations and Enlightenment issued, the Holy Synod responded to the criticism of the Metropolitan of Kythira regarding the decision of the Hierarchy on the Ukrainian autocephaly issue and the way the decision was made.

The announcement of the Holy Synod indirectly, not to say clearly, rebutted the statements of Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira, who disputes the broad acceptance of the communiqué issued after the extraordinary meeting by the Hierarchy.
The announcement of the Holy Synod mentions that the press release, issued by the committee responsible after the extraordinary meeting of the Hierarchy on Saturday, was read out “to all the members of the Holy Synod and, following the corrections proposed by the Hierarchs, was finalised and was adopted as the final decision of the Hierarchy.”

Metropolitan Kallinikos of Paronaxia responded to the statement of the Metropolitan of Kythira, refuting the claims of Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira that Metropolitan Kallinikos authorised him to vote on behalf of him in the event of voting on the issue.

The following is the full announcement of the Holy Synod:

In response to the announcement issued by Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira on October 12, 2019, which is available on the Internet, regarding decision made by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece on the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which was announced in a press release by the Press Committee, it is clarified that, as all Hierarchs who attended the meeting may confirm and recorded in the Minutes of the Holy Synod, the press release, which was based both on the Archbishop’s recommendation, the discussion in which 33 Hierarchs participated, and the conclusions, which His Beatitude announced after the discussion, was read out “to all the members of the Holy Synod and, following the corrections proposed by the Hierarchs, was finalised and was adopted as the final decision of the Hierarchy. Consequently, the Press Committee, which consists of three Hierarchs, has spoken the truth on what happened, and any other form of interpretation does not reflect the reality.

GREEK CHURCH ISSUES STATEMENT, OFFERS LITTLE CLARITY

Athens, October 16, 2019

327458.p.jpg?mtime=1571223306

The Greek Orthodox Church issued a statement yesterday reaffirming the statement that was issued after Saturday’s session of the Bishops’ Council.

The statement was issued in response to the statements of His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira, who wrote that it is unfortunate that the Council’s press committee did not accurately convey what had transpired at the hierarchical meeting.

The Church’s new statement states that the three-member press committee “has expressed the truth of the matter and any other attempt to interpret it does not reflect the reality.”

The statement notes that that which was stated in the press release on Saturday and which is recorded in the official minutes of the session is based on the recommendations of Archbishop Ieronymos and the results of the discussions that took place, in which 33 of the hierarchs present spoke, and “took its final form and is the decision of the hierarchy.”

Unfortunately the new statement does not clearly indicate whether the Greek Church recognized the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) or not.

Abp. Ieronymos is expected to concelebrate with Patriarch Bartholomew in Thessaloniki on Saturday, October 19, though there is reportedly a group of bishops who have entreated Abp. Ieronymos not to go, as Pat. Bartholomew will surely commemorate “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko, the primate of the OCU.

As both the Holy Synod and Bishops’ Council of the Greek Church voted to entrust Abp. Ieronymos with resolving the matter of recognizing the OCU on behalf of the Greek Church, commemorating Epiphany Dumenko would presumably mean the Greek Church has accepted and entered into communion with the OCU.

“We did not make a decision. If now, after this discussion, the Archbishop plans to commemorate [Epiphany] or to move ahead, he takes full responsibility upon himself,” Met. Seraphim of Kythira told RIA-Novosti yesterday.

GREEK HIERARCHS CALLING ON ABP. IERONYMOS NOT TO CONCELEBRATE WITH PAT. BARTHOLOMEW ON SATURDAY

Athens, October 16, 2019

Photo: athos.guide

Photo: athos.guide

In the wake of the confusion following Saturday’s extraordinary session of the Bishops’ Council of the Greek Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira and reportedly several other hierarchs of the Church are calling upon Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens not to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy with Patriarch Bartholomew in Thessaloniki on Saturday, October 19, as planned.

In August, the Holy Synod recognized “the privilege of the primate of the Church of Greece to further deal with the question of recognition of the Church of Ukraine,” and the Bishops’ Council reaffirmed this recognition on Saturday.

In his own presentation offered on Saturday, Abp. Ieronymos, who has been empowered to deal with the question on behalf of the Greek Church, recommended that the Greek Church recognize the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU). For some hierarchs, this implies recognition, while others have rejected the idea that the Church recognized the OCU, as no vote on that specific question took place.

Thus, many are looking to Saturday as the day when the Archbishop’s position will become clear, as “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko of the OCU is sure to be commemorated at a Liturgy with Pat. Bartholomew. There are also rumors that Epiphany himself will appear in Thessaloniki to concelebrate, though as OrthoChristian has noted, he is already expected to be in New York to receive a human rights award from the Constantinople-serving Order of St. Andrew.

In his statement in which he detailed that no vote on the recognition of the OCU took place on Saturday, Met. Seraphim of Kythira calls upon Abp. Ieronymos and Pat. Bartholomew not to rush and not to exacerbate the situation by concelebrating with Epiphany.

“Allow me to conclude my address with a warm and heartfelt appeal to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece, with a request not to hurry and not to create a critical situation in the Church, and not to start joint hierarchical Divine services with the so-called ‘primate’ of the new ‘autocephaly’ until a pan-Orthodox discussion of this complex and, one might say, explosive canonical and ecclesiological problem,” His Eminence movingly writes.

Further, in an interview with RIA-Novosti, the Metropolitan expressed strong fears about aggravation of the situation that would arise from Saturday’s Liturgy.

“We are concerned that this situation will escalate and, I hope, it won’t come to that. If in a few days, when they will have a joint Liturgy in Thessaloniki, they commemorate Epiphany, I fear there will be an escalation,” he said, adding that he even feared bloodshed.

“There are exactly 11 of us who do not want the issue of autocephaly to go further. We say that a new Bishops’ Council should be held… Personally, I would not agree with anything on the issue of recognizing autocephaly,” Met. Seraphim commented.

He added that he also fears excesses on the Holy Mountain during the Patriarch’s visit there from October 19-22. There are only four monasteries that support recognition, while 16 are against it, the Metropolitan said.

Further, the Ukrainian Telegram channel Pravblog reports that its sources indicate that a group of bishops in the Greek Church “convincingly” called upon Abp. Ieronymos not to go to Thessaloniki on October 19 and not to serve with Pat. Bartholomew, who will commemorate Epiphany.

Abp. Ieronymos reportedly responded in a private conversation saying, “I’ll think about it, because I’ve been dragged into all this.”

BY СТАЊЕ СТВАРИ on 16. ( 0 )

mihajlovski-sabor.jpg?w=700

arhiepiskop-jeronim.jpg?w=700

hrizostom-ii.jpg?w=267&h=300
