MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT

 

 

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the Prophets: ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; Make his paths straight.’ John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.” (Mk 1: 1-4)

St. John the Baptist “prepares the way of the Lord”; He clears the “paths” or makes them “straight” for the One Who is coming, Jesus Christ. The “way” and the “paths” being talked about here are found in people’s hearts. They are cluttered with “sin” that is a loss of focus, because sin, ἁμαρτία, literally means “missing the point.” John calls the people to change focus, to “repent,” and clear away the clutter of their sins by confessing them. By cleaning house in this way, by unburdening themselves of their sins, the people are made ready to hear the “gospel” or “good news” that is coming.

So everything begins with “the baptism of repentance,” with a change of focus. This is a “baptism” to which I am called every day, because I lose focus, but also make a new beginning, every day. Let me keep watch over the “paths” that need to be kept straight in my heart, so that the Lord’s voice can reach me. Let me maintain a humble openness to myself, to other human beings, and to Christ’s voice in my life, by confessing my sins on a regular basis.

This Monday, as I begin my work-week, let me be open, in humble watchfulness, to the One Who is coming. He comes, bringing me change and growth every day, when I “make His paths straight” to the best of my ability.

IDLENESS & DESPONDENCY

 

“O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, love of power, and idle talking give me not.” (Lenten Prayer of St. Ephrem, part 1)

How very “post-post-modern” of St. Ephrem that the spirit of “idleness” (inactivity, sloth, procrastination) and its outgrowth of “despondency” (various forms of depression and feelings of unfulfillment) are the very first concerns of his famous prayer. In our time, when opportunities abound for every form of distraction and entertainment, whenever and wherever th WiFi is working, these “spirits” have become our everyday companions.

St. John Climacus says that despondency makes one “look out the window” (in his context, of the monastic cell, The Ladder XIII.13). Indeed it makes me look “elsewhere,” away from the here and now, which, in despondency, ceases to satisfy. Despondency makes one lukewarm toward one’s own vocation; toward one’s own “mission” in life. It can make a previously happily-married man wander off to seek another woman.

The good news is that the challenge of despondency, when I stand up to it in Christ, in the grace-filled tools He offers me, leads to immense spiritual growth. “Nothing brings so many crowns,” writes that same author, St. John Climacus, “as a battle with despondency.” (XIII.12)

So let me begin this morning with an active, conscious, gratitude for, and attentiveness to, the here and now. Let me take a bit of time to be alone with God, in heartfelt prayer on my knees, thanking Him and asking Him to discipline me in His simple ways, guiding me and nudging me forward amidst the pesky calls of idleness and despondency.

GOING & DOING IN FAITH

 

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Gen 12: 1-4)

As it says in Hebrews, Abraham “obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebr 11: 8) He leaves the seen for the unseen; the known for the unknown. That’s faith. It means letting God do His will in my life, by accepting the responsibilities and people and places to which He has sent me, even though I can’t understand, “Why me?”

So, “doing” God’s will doesn’t mean figuring it out. And faith in Him removes the anxieties of not knowing the “Why,” as well as the “What Next.” Let me renew my faith today, by re-connecting with God in prayer and re-focusing on Him. The Lord wants to “bless” me, so that I myself “will be a blessing,” as He calls me and leads me “to the land” that He “will show me.” Let me let Him do that today, as I get up and do the next right thing, in “meek” acceptance of His will. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Mt 5: 5)

У скиту Светог Василија у усамљености своје ћелије, Старац (Јосиф Исихаста) је често знао шта се дешава у спољашњем свету боље него они који су се трудили да сазнају о таквим стварима. Једног дана, Отац Матеј, који је био вођа групе зилота којима је Старац припадао, почео је да исповеда неке екстремистичке позиције. Он је био вешт говорник који је мамио многе са својим мишљењима. Али кад је Старац чуо те његове ставове, постао је забринут и почео је да се моли Богу за њега. После неког времена, Бог је открио истину Старцу у визији:

Видео сам да су тамо два пута која су Оци зацртали: киновијски и аскетски. И видео сам да је брат  пратио ниједан од та два него други пут, али је рекао, „Ја ћу овде!“ Онда је кренуо низбрдо кроз грмље које се спушта до мора. И тамо је био неко поред њега који ми је рекао:“Да ли га видиш? Пут који је узео води га у дубине!“

У исто време, такође сам видео да сам у Светом Василију, горе у скиту. Видео сам страшан пожар који је горео целим скитом. Па сам рекао са болом:“Ко је запалио ову ватру која гори доле целим скитом?“ Онда ми је неко рекао:“Отац Матеј ју је запалио, покушавајући да подржи његов начин размишљања!“

Визија је помогла да Старац разуме да ствари нису добре са начином живота оца Матеја, и то је такође натерало Старца да постави питање о његовим еклисиолошким ставовима. (Мој Старац Јосиф Исихаста, стр. 164-165)
