@Sluncokret54

zanimaju me svi nazivi: i crkveni ispravni liturgijski i oni narodni, folklorni.

New archeological finds shed new light on St Paul's Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of Rome's four major Churches. It was founded by emperor Constantine over the tomb of apostle Paul, which centuries ago, stood far from Rome's walls. That's why it is also known as Saint Paul Outside the Walls.

August 11, 2013. (Romereports.com) The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of Rome's four major Churches. It was founded by emperor Constantine over the tomb of apostle Paul, which centuries ago, stood far from Rome's walls. That's why it is also known as Saint Paul Outside the Walls.

For the first time, the Vatican has announced the discovery of several archeological sites that were associated with the Basilica's daily life in the Middle Ages. Even though the route through the site is still provisional, visitors can already tour the area and read about the history of the site.

UMBERTO UTRO - Vatican Museums
“In order to build a modern welcome center for pilgrims, we discovered a facility that was built 1500 years ago, by our predecessors, for the same reason. The Popes, who wanted to provide St. Paul's with facilities that could accommodate all the pilgrims that would flock to the tomb of the Apostle of the Gentiles.”

During its 1500 year-long history, the Basilica's architecture has changed immensely, even though the original shrine containing St. Paul's remains still lies under the high altar. Around the year 1000 AD the basilica and its lands were entrusted to Benedictine monks, who still reside there to this day.

Among the discoveries are the ancient 'garden of the monks' and medieval pilgrim facilities, which were unveiled in an official conference attended by the archeologists.

The archeological finds in the area, include courtyards, a well and porches, which were all meant host the pilgrims that would visit St. Paul's from all over the world. In a way, the structures show that the deep devotion St. Paul, never ceased through the ages.

UMBERTO UTRO - Vatican Museums
“Today, for us, these are extremely precious finds, because they must also be considered in the spiritual value that this discovery holds. They are traces of the uninterrupted devotion to the Apostle Paul.”

As part of the tour, drawings and reconstructions are available, to show how the area looked in ancient times.

New archaeological site unveiled in Rome

An important new archaeological site was unveiled in Rome today. Located inside the area that belongs to the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls and its adjoining Benedictine Monastery, extensive digs have revealed what used to be the pumpkin patch tended to by the Benedictine Monks, and show that what today is a complex made up of the Basilica, Bell Tower, Cloister and adjoining Monastery, was once a much larger settlement with a sanctuary for the poor, a well, tower and housing for some 200 people.

While the meticulous work of archaeologists has revealed the layout of the ground and the kind of buildings that surrounded the ancient Basilica of St Paul’s outside the Walls, more than 15,000 ceramic fragments, sculptures and coins give an idea of what the people of the time and their everyday lives, were like.

After a brief welcome speech by Cardinal James Harvey, Archpriest of the Basilica of St Paul, members of the Vatican Museums-backed team who have been collaborating with members of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology and of Rome’s La Sapienza University, spoke about the importance of the new archaeological site. Six years of hard work on the part of a team of archaeologists, engineers, historians and experts in restoration has revealed what had been a missing link in the history of the city of Rome. In particular it shines the light on the time of Pope John VIII whose chief aim during his pontificate was to defend the Roman state and the authority of the Holy See at Rome from the Saracens.

As Professor Lucrezia Spera of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology revealed, although there are many literary sources detailing events and costumes of the Early Middle Ages in the city of Rome, until now there were no consistent archaeological remains bearing witness to the period between the 8th and 9th century AD.
