Prva dva grada u karantinu u Evropi, u Italiji:

Local official urges people in Codogno and Castiglione d'Adda, two towns near Milan, to stay at home as a precautionary measure and to avoid social contact - ANSA

Coronavirus, Lombardy Region: “The citizens of Codogno and Castiglione should stay at home and avoid social contacts as a precaution”

At the moment the health authorities are reconstructing the movements 38-year-old: two entire towns, Codogno and Castiglione d’Adda, have been placed in quarantine from the Lombardy Region: “Citizens stay home”. I am at least sixty people who are sure they have come into contact with the 38-year-old: they will take the quarantine. It has not yet been determined whether the days under health control will be spent in an ad hoc facility or in one’s own homes. “We have already reconstructed both the contacts of the doctors, of nurses, gods family closer to which we have already done i swabs. All have already been put in isolation or called to stay in isolation at their home “, explained the councilor for Welfare of Lombardy Giulio Gallera to RaiNews. “Today – added Gallera – we are on his work place“To make” swabs to all his colleagues. ” The man worked for a multinational a Casalpusterlengo.

The “patient zero” works in Fiorenzuola d’Arda. Gallera: “Possible asymptomatic contagion” – The Ausl of Piacenza has initiated audits and controls also in the Emilia region: the colleague who returned from China with whom the 38-year-old patient went out to dinner works for a company in Fiorenzuola d’Arda. The Ausl checks on the territory are therefore aimed at verifying the possible contacts of the possible “zero patient” returned from China with Piacenza employees of the company. It’s a manager which normally spends most of the year in China, with limited periods in Italy. He came back in on January 20 and 21, and had mild flu symptoms, writes the Courier service, around February 10th. “It could be a asymptomatic contagion, our technicians are investigating to understand it. Between dinner and the onset of symptoms are 16-18 days passed“, Councilor Gallera explained to Agora up RAI-3. S

Француска....

Since dawn, this Friday, February 21, 2020, the gendarmes have established an imposing security perimeter around the small Augeronne town of Branville (Calvados) and the holiday center which is to accommodate 28 French nationals from the region during the day. Wuhan city, China, home of the Coronavirus epidemic.
The gendarmes established a security perimeter around the Branville holiday village, where the new returnees to Normandy will be confined. At dawn this Friday morning, the area around the Normandy Garden vacation center is blocked by the gendarmerie. It is there that for 14 days, 28 French nationals from Wuhan will be placed in quarantine. Dams have been erected in the village of Branville and extend as close as 400 m from the center.
Yellow diversion signs have crept into the landscape and large barriers are preventing vehicles from moving. Only Normandy Garden employees, local residents and technical teams in their cars and trucks can cross the security perimeter. https://www.en24.news/N/2020/02/coronavirus-the-municipality-of-branville-placed-under-high-surveillance-by-the-police.html

"There is an art to intelligently scraping web sites,' Beam said. 'But it´s also Google´s core technology since the 1990s.'

Google itself started its own Flu Trends service to detect outbreaks in 2008 by looking for patterns in search queries about flu symptoms. Experts criticized it for overestimating flu prevalence. Google shut down the website in 2015 and handed its technology to nonprofit organizations such as HealthMap to use Google data to build their own models.

Google is now working with Brownstein's team on a similar web-based approach for tracking the geographical spread of tick-borne Lyme disease.

Scientists are also using big data to model possible routes of early disease transmission.

In early January, Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease physician and researcher at Toronto General Hospital, analyzed commercial flight data with BlueDot founder Kamran Khan to see which cities outside mainland China were most connected to Wuhan.

Wuhan stopped outbound commercial air travel in late January - but not before an estimated 5 million people had fled the city, as the Wuhan mayor later told reporters.

'We showed that the highest volume of flights from Wuhan were to Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong,' Bogoch said. 'Lo and behold, a few days later we started to see cases pop up in these places.'

In 2016, the researchers used a similar approach to predict the spread of the Zika virus from Brazil to southern Florida.

Now that many governments have launched aggressive measures to curb disease transmission, it's harder to build algorithms to predict what's next, Bogoch said.

Artificial intelligence systems depend on vast amounts of prior data to train computers how to interpret new facts. But there are no close parallels to the way China is enforcing quarantine zones that impact hundreds of millions of people."

Novel Coronavirus a 'Tremendous Public Health Threat,' CDC Says

"This new virus represents a tremendous public health threat. We don't yet have a vaccine for this novel virus, nor do we have a medication to treat it specifically," Nancy Messonnier, MD, director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC, said during a telephone news briefing today.

"We never expected that we would catch every single traveler with novel coronavirus returning from China, given the nature of this virus and how it's spreading," Messonnier said, emphasizing that community spread of the virus is not being seen in the United States yet but it is "very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen."

"The day may come" when the United States implements school and business closures such as those currently being enforced in Asia, Messonnier warned.

Opinions on the coronavirus outbreak

The number of reports from multiple different countries in the past 36 hours showing what is most likely community human to human spread of SARS-CoV-2 confirms fears that the virus is on its way to causing a pandemic.

Prof. Dr. Benhur Lee, MDProfessor of Microbiology

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), Feb. 21, 2020

I think it is likely we will see a global pandemic. If a pandemic happens, 40% to 70% of people world-wide are likely to be infected in the coming year. What proportion is asymptomatic, I can't give a good number.

****

This is really a global problem that’s not going to go away in a week or two. What makes this one perhaps harder to control than SARS is that it may be possible to transmit before you are sick. I think we should be prepared for the equivalent of a very, very bad flu season, or maybe the worst-ever flu season in modern times.

Prof. Marc Lipsitch Prof. of Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health Head, Harvard Ctr. Communicable Disease Dynamics

It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic. But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci (Director, National Inst. Allergy and Infectious Disease)

It’s a new virus. We don’t know much about it, and therefore we’re all concerned to make certain it doesn’t evolve into something even worse

9 South Koreans test positive for coronavirus after returning from Israel

Israeli Health Ministry publishes list of places the group visited, including Jerusalem, on February 8-15 trip, warns anyone who was in close contact with them to self-quarantine

The Health Ministry on Saturday said nine South Koreans tested positive for the coronavirus after a recent visit to Israel.

The Koreans were in Israel from February 8-15 and were confirmed to have the virus upon their return to South Korea, according to a statement from the ministry.

The ministry called on anyone who was in close contact with the Koreans to report this and self-quarantine for 14 days from the date of their last interaction.

It also posted a list of places the group visited, among them Netanya, Caesaria, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Beersheba, Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Hebron.

The statement from the ministry came shortly after a BBC reporter in Seoul said seven South Koreans from a tour group to Israel of 77 organized by the Catholic Church tested positive for the virus upon their return home.

It was not clear whether they were carrying the virus when they arrived in Israel. Symptoms of the virus can take up to two weeks, and possibly longer, to present. South Korea has reported over 400 cases of the virus to date.

“We’re trying to clarify if someone from the local churches was in contact with them [the South Koreans],” Wadih Abu Al-Nasr, the Vatican’s spokesman in Israel, told Channel 13 news.

“I’m hoping they weren’t infected in Israel. I wish them a speedy recovery and hope and pray that none of our people here were infected by this problematic virus,” he added.

The manager of a Jerusalem hotel where the group stayed during its visit told Channel 12 that staff that cleaned the group’s rooms had been instructed by the Health Ministry to self quarantine.

“Other hotel workers must report if they feel ill or develop any symptoms,” he said. He added that employees were calm.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority confirmed the group visited the national parks Tel Beersheva, Masada and Caesaria.

“Instructions were given to employees at the sites who were in contact [with the South Koreans],” it said in a statement.

The report comes a day after Israel reported its first case of the novel COVID-19 virus, an Israeli woman who returned to the country after being quarantined on a cruise ship off Japan that saw a large number of infections.

South Korea on Saturday reported an eight-fold jump in viral infections in four days to 433, most of them linked to a church and a hospital in and around the country’s fourth-largest city, where health workers scrambled to screen more than 9,000 worshipers.

There’s concern that the death toll, currently at two, could grow. Virus patients with signs of pneumonia or other serious conditions at the Cheongdo hospital were transferred to other facilities, 17 of them in critical condition, Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told reporters.

He said that the outbreak had entered a serious new phase, but still expressed cautious optimism that it can be contained to the region surrounding Daegu, where the first case was reported on Tuesday.

In some positive news, China said Saturday the daily count of new virus cases there fell significantly to 397, though another 109 people died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Most of the new cases and all but three of the deaths were in Hubei province, where the outbreak started.

However, in a troubling sign, Hubei’s government reported Saturday that a man showed symptoms of the virus 27 days after being infected, according to Reuters, nearly double the estimated incubation time of 14 days.

The new figures, along with an upward revision of Hubei’s earlier count, brought the total number of cases in mainland China to 76,288 with 2,345 deaths. China has severely restricted travel and imposed strict quarantine measures to stop the virus from spreading.

Globally, nearly 78,000 people have been infected in 29 countries, and more than 2,300 have died. Italian authorities say a 78-year-old man died of the disease and the number of people infected has more than quadrupled due to an emerging cluster of cases in the country’s north. Many of the new cases represented the first infections in Italy acquired through secondary contagion and brought the country’s total to 19.

A dozen towns in northern Italy were on effective lockdown Saturday as a second death from coronavirus sparked fears throughout the area.

In the United States, 35 people have tested positive for the virus, including 18 who returned home from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan and one new case reported Friday in California.

Saudi Arabia barred travel to Iran and said anyone coming from there can enter only after a 14-day quarantine. The decision directly impacts thousands of Iranians who travel to Mecca and Medina for Islamic pilgrimages, effectively barring them from the kingdom.

Iran has reported five deaths for a total of 28 cases.

Alarm in the holy land after visit by pilgrims with coronavirus

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli and Palestinian authorities sought to quell fears of a potential local outbreak of the coronavirus after learning that South Korean pilgrims who had toured some of the holy land’s most popular sites were later found to be carrying the virus.

The nine tourists, who tested positive for coronavirus after returning to South Korea, earlier this month visited holy sites including Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cave of the Patriarchs in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.

The ministry published the group’s itinerary and said it was carrying out an “epidemiological investigation” to track any potential spread. It ordered anyone who was in close contact with the group to report it to the ministry and to stay at home for 14 days while monitoring their health.

The Palestinian Health Ministry issued similar instructions for the Palestinian territories.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry called an emergency meeting to assess the impact of what it called “the pilgrims affair” and, if needed, to take steps to explain the situation to others around the world.

South Korea on Saturday reported a jump in the number of new coronavirus cases in the country.

An Israeli woman who was aboard the coronavirus-hit cruise ship Diamond Princess tested positive for the virus after returning to Israel on Friday but was in good condition and not showing any symptoms, health officials said.

There have been no other confirmed cases of the virus in Israel or the Palestinian territories.
