"We need to understand how the quarantine measures on board were implemented, what the air filtration on board is like, how the cabins are connected and how waste products are disposed of," MacDermott said.

"There could also be another mode of transmission we're not familiar with," she said, noting the possibility of environmental spread and the importance of "deep-cleaning" the entire ship to prevent people from touching contaminated surfaces."

"Given how the virus has continued to spread, we have to presume everyone leaving the ship is potentially infected, and therefore they have to go through another two-week quarantine period," he said. "Not to do so would be reckless."

Japanese health officials say a 14-day quarantine on the ship is adequate, noting that all but one of more than 500 Japanese returnees from the epicenter of the virus in China who initially tested negative were found to be virus-free at the end of their 14-day quarantine.

Those officials also defended precautions taken on the ship. About 1,000 crew members were told to wear surgical masks, wash their hands, use disinfectant sprays and stop operations at restaurants, bars and other entertainment areas after Feb. 5, when the first group of 10 infections was reported and the start of the 14-day quarantine was announced.

Passengers were instructed to stay in their cabins and not walk around or contact other passengers. Those in windowless cabins could go out on the deck for about an hour each day.

The quarantine was largely for passengers because crew members kept sharing double rooms and continued to serve guests by delivering food, letters, towels and amenities, and entering passenger cabins for cleaning. Crew members also ate in groups in a crew mess hall.

"Unlike passengers, crew members share their rooms, they share food, and that's why some of them are infected even after the quarantine started," said Shigeru Omi, a former regional director for the World Health Organization.

SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported 52 new cases of the new coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the nation to 156.

The number of COVID-19 infections here has almost tripled in just three days, with most new infections traced to church services in the southeastern city of Daegu.

Of the 52 new cases, 41 are in Daegu, 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and neighboring North Gyeongsang province. Another three were reported in Seoul, the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.

U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) has limited all service members' non-essential travel to, from and around South Korea's southeastern city of Daegu, and banned visits to several locations in the city to mitigate the risk of coronavirus infection among its population.

Калифорнија, Округ Хамболт

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch has received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of one case of COVID-19 in a Humboldt County resident. A close contact who has symptoms is being tested as well. This marks the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. Presently, the ill individuals are doing well and self-isolating at home, while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit. Close contacts of theseindividualswill also be quarantined at home and monitored for symptoms by Public Health staff. With the amount of foreign travel by county residents, including travel to China, it is not surprising that a case has emerged locally. Additional cases may occur either in returning travelers or their close contacts.

CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The outbreak first started in Wuhan, China, but cases have been identified in a growing number of other international locations, including the United States. This page will be updated regularly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Pandemic could inflict huge cost to economy, report says: If the coronavirus morphs into a global pandemic, global GDP for 2020 would drop by $1.1 trillion, or 1.3% of previous forecasts, and send the U.S. into recession, according to economic forecasting agency Oxford Economics. If a pandemic were limited to Asia, global GDP could dip by $400 billion, or 0.5% below expectations.

Nearly 7,000 travelers in CA asked to monitor, isolate themselves: Federal officials suggested to more than 6,700 travelers who have returned to California after Feb. 2 from China, outside of Hubei Province, to “monitor their health, stay home and limit interactions with others as much as possible,” California Department of Public Health officials said.

South Korea's southeastern area was on full alert as the number of coronavirus patients continued to surge on Friday, with most cases assumed to be related to a church associated with a minor religious sect.

South Korea reported 100 new cases of the new coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 204.

The Lombardy Region has mobilized to try to isolate as soon as possible the possibility of spreading an infection spread by coronavirus . Containment measures were taken on Thursday evening, when a 38-year-old from Codogno was hospitalized and tested positive for Covid 19. The first step was to quarantine the hospital, closing the emergency room and canceling the initiatives scheduled for the next few days. At the same time, a phase of research was started on people who have been in contact with humans in recent days. This research showed that the 38-year-old's wife had symptoms similar to those of pneumonia . The woman was immediately transported to the Sacco hospital in Milan. Here she was tested which, unfortunately, was positive. The woman's condition is of particular concern, as she is 7 months pregnant .

Coronavirus: the "patient zero" has no symptoms

- According to the first reconstruction, it seems that the 38-year-old from Codogno may have been infected by a colleague. The two met in early February for a dinner after he returned from China. The friend of the man hospitalized in intensive care was taken to the Sacco hospital in Milan for tests. From the first analyzes it seems that the man has no symptoms and therefore has not contracted the coronavirus. It is possible that he is not the cause of the spread of the virus in Lombardy . In fact, the man returned to Italy on January 20 and was always in good health, with the exception of February 10, the day on which he manifested some flu symptoms. This is precisely why he is still in solitary confinement in the hospital, where they are subjecting him to further investigations.

Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin and the National Institutes of Health have made a critical breakthrough toward developing a vaccine for the 2019 novel coronavirus by creating the first 3D atomic scale map of the part of the virus that attaches to and infects human cells.

spike-protein-structure-214x300.png

This is a 3D atomic scale map, or molecular structure, of the 2019-nCoV spike protein. The protein takes on two different shapes, called conformations—one before it infects a host cell, and another during infection. This structure represents the protein before it infects a cell, called the prefusion conformation. Credit: Jason McLellan/Univ. of Texas at Austin

The molecule the team produced, and for which they obtained a structure, represents only the extracellular portion of the spike protein, but it is enough to elicit an immune response in people, and thus serve as a vaccine.

Next, McLellan’s team plans to use their molecule to pursue another line of attack against the virus that causes COVID-19, using the molecule as a “probe” to isolate naturally produced antibodies from patients who have been infected with the novel coronavirus and successfully recovered. In large enough quantities, these antibodies could help treat a coronavirus infection soon after exposure. For example, the antibodies could protect soldiers or health care workers sent into an area with high infection rates on too short notice for the immunity from a vaccine to take effect.
