Is it safe to move to Sweden?

I plan to move abroad, I'm Italian, married, we are workers in technical fields; computer science and medical with newborn daughter. I always admire Swedish system, but now I'm scouting for info about that nation and I'm worried about muslim riots and not archived multiculturalism. Say me that I'm racist, but I don't like that culture, especially now that I have got a daughter. What's up really in Swenden?

 

 

Trust me, don’t move to Sweden. I have been in your shoes. Four years ago I was in a similar situation: I am a Southern European who moved with his wife to another Scandinavian country. Like you, we were both in technical fields. Like you, I had always admired the Scandinavian system. We spent almost three years there, and all in all, I believe that Scandinavia is not a good place to go for professional immigrants. Let me tell you why.

The main problem you will find is not directly related with the Muslim themselves. Yeah, there are issues, but they are mainly in some low-income suburbs around the main cities; banlieues, as the French would say. As a professional, you won’t live there. You will see some stuff in the news, but as far as you are concerned, it could be happening in Mars. Moreover, there are plenty of Muslims who are completely integrated in Scandinavia and are really great people. In fact, some of my best friends in Scandinavia came from Muslim countries.

What will affect your family is, as you put it, the “non achieved multiculturalism”. After living in Scandinavia, I became an opponent of multiculturalism; cultural assimilation is the way to go. In practice, the Scandinavian model of multiculturalism works as a barely disguised version of segregationism; there is some basic help for immigrants, but they are not expected to join the Scandinavian culture, to “become one more”. This sets them up for failure. And this failure will affect you, as the perception of immigrants in Scandinavia is incredibly negative; far-right parties like the Swedish Democrats or the Danish People’s Party are substantially more electorally successful than their Southern European counterparts (and, in my opinion, even more racist).
I will be straight-forward: as immigrants, you will be perceived as second-class citizens; most of people will assume that you came to Sweden to take advantage of the system. In Scandinavia immigrants are talked about as either people in need of help (by left-wingers) or a nuisance (by right-wingers); a honest argument on the benefits of working class and high-skilled immigration is pretty rare. In my experience, many Scandinavians were absolutely mystified by the existence of well-off immigrants.

The failure of multiculturalism in Sweden, added to the homogeneity of Scandinavian society, will particularly affect your daughter. She won’t be perceived as “Swedish” by the vast majority of Swedish, even if she spends her whole childhood there. She won’t have the right surname, and she may not even “look Swedish”. When I was living there, I always liked to talk with children of immigrants about how they saw their nationality; turned out that most of them saw themselves as “Scandinavians” but they admitted that the “real Scandinavians” didn’t see them as such. Note that some of them were of Eastern and Southern European descent; the “European unity” ideal that is common in Southern Europe doesn’t work in Scandinavia.

If you want to move, I would recommend you other, more internationally-oriented countries. The United Kingdom, USA or even Germany are good options from my point of view. If you are going to contribute as a high-skilled immigrant, do it in a country that appreciates it.

Послала мама (између осталог) неколико тегли меда у (моју) тастбину (прошверцовали преко вавилонске границе). И управо скво прича с њенима и пита ме: шта је багрем (пошто је багремов мед). Ја кажем врста дрвета, а она: ”А да, као у Балашевићевој песми.” 

Nista dok ne pocne govoriti "rakija" umjesto tekila. A to sto ces je nauciti jeresi da burek moze i bez mesa... Tu nista ne mogu osim da duboko uzdahnem...

Potpuno tačno za većinu ovih migranata,  to je i problem.  

Ne verujem da je toliki problem što "ne izgledaš švedski" da ne bi mogao da se preseliš, prvo... Naravno, zemlju sa "feminističkom vladom" bi izbegavao u širem krugu, oni su i učinili sa masovnom muslimanskom (MENA - Middle East, North Africa) imigracijom da u Švedsku više ne može.

Far right je tu logičan ishod, pitanje je kad će i nacisti da se pojave, ako već nisu...

Мој, Ауроре... Не можеш ти то верујеш док не искусиш. Не можеш да доносиш закључке о земљама на основу интернета, мораш да живиш ту. Ови људи су ти једноставно коцкасти и затворени. Не смета њима само "коришћење система", њима смета џемпер другачије боје од уобичајене.

Mislim da su zatvoreni i međusobno, ne samo prema dođošima i malo drugačijima (kako sam čuo)...

Amigo, pade mi na pamet pitanje za tebe. Kakvo je misljenje tvoje senorite o Balkanu, Balkancima, nasem mentalitetu, kulturi, istoriji i sl.? Kakve su razlike nas i Latinosa, kao i da li postoje neke slicnosti gdje smo kompatibilni?
