If you were homeschooled, do you plan to homeschool your own children? Why or why not?

No, definitely not.

I was homeschooled from Kindergarten all the way to college. Not only did my mom homeschool me, she also homeschooled my five younger siblings.

My mom did an amazing job. She made sure we had structure in our days — we had to get up and be dressed and have eaten breakfast before starting school at a set time. She made sure we were socialized by signing us up for sports and other extracurricular activities. Though we were Catholic, that was never her reason for homeschooling and she chose a secular curriculum. I read many of the same books as my public or private school counterparts.

Being the oldest, I was often the “guinea pig”, but together we carefully selected an accredited curriculum for “high school” to make sure that I would have a high school diploma that a college would accept.

People were often surprised to learn I was homeschooled because I “didn’t act weird”. I knew exactly what they meant — we didn’t participate in a lot of homeschooler-specific activities because a lot of the kids and parents were jut a little too… different.

Everyone thought that college would be a challenge for me but I excelled. It was easier than my “high school” years. I have homeschooling to thank for that.

Though we had structure, we also had a lot of freedom. I could read my textbooks outside lounging in the sun. I could do “double days” if I wanted to have a day off. I usually finished schoolwork before 1:00 and I never had homework because it was just a part of my coursework.

But I would not homeschool my own children.

Not because I think I missed out on anything — I briefly worried over this in 11th grade because all of my friends told me I was “missing out”. Looking back I have no regrets about not sitting on a school bus or eating in a cafeteria (and I was invited to every prom/homecoming).

But it’s because I’m selfish.

Homeschooling (and doing it right) is a ton of work. My mom is now well into her 2nd decade of homeschooling and I don’t know how she stays sane. The thing about having your mom as your teacher is that you don’t necessarily treat her with the same respect that you might a stranger. I think I was a fairly respectful child, but still, there was plenty of whining, plenty of procrastination, plenty of talking back, even.

I have neither the time nor the patience for that.

Not to mention the huge responsibility of it all — some of her family members were very negative, one of my uncles even told me that I would never attend college because my mother (who never went to college) could never possibly prepare me.

My success or failure was going to be a direct reflection on her.

That’s a lot of pressure. I think I’ll pass.

Искрено, мени то делује потпуно бајковито. Знам људе који су се уклопили тако што су успели да потпуно сакрију све оно што заиста јесу и постану исти као "домороци". Таква интеграција верујем да је могућа. Али да ти северњаци, уз пар јако ретких изузетака, воле "ону Босанку", то ми делује мање реално од Зорана Бабића квантног физичара. Амери су управо такви. Кад си с њима друг, они воле да те зову "my Serb" или тако нешто.

Dve su veoma otvoreno rekle šta bi htele, (if you know what I mean)... Ali sam odlučio da mi to ne treba. A opet sam svestan da je to najluđi san koji ima every other guy.
