Tears in Heaven (1992)

"Would you know my name / If I saw you in heaven"

Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" gets to you even if you don't know its backstory. But, sadly, most of us do: The legendary guitarist wrote "Tears" after the tragic death of his 4-year-old son, Connor, who accidentally fell from a window of a New York apartment building in 1991. Clapton originally intended never to release the song. It was, as he wrote in his 2007 autobiography, "just what I did to stop from going mad."

Candle in the Wind (1997 version)

"Your candle's burned out long before / Your legend ever will"

Originally written as an ode to Marilyn Monroe,"Candle in the Wind"—with new lyrics by Bernie Taupin—moved an entire country to tears when Elton John performed it at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997.

For No One (1966)

"And in her eyes you see nothing / No sign of love behind the tears"

John Lennon called this track from "Revolver" one of his favorite songs by Paul McCartney. "For No One," recounts a breakup from differing perspectives, each adding a layer of sadness. That descending piano line, mournful French horn solo and unresolved ending chord just sound like the helpless emotional state we've all experienced.

Keep Me In Your Heart (2003)

"Sometimes when you're doin' simple things around the house / Maybe you'll think of me and smile"

Warren Zevon wrote "Keep Me In Your Heart" after learning he had terminal cancer in 2002. This dignified plea of a dying man would have emotional power even if you weren't aware of the surrounding circumstances.

If You See Her, Say Hello (1975)

"She might think that I've forgotten her / don't tell her it isn't so"

Bob Dylan's masterpiece "Blood on the Tracks" is filled with shattering songs, from the labyrinth of loss that is "Tangled Up in Blue" to the bitter breakup anthem "Idiot Wind." But none more poignant than this one.

Kentucky Avenue (1978)

"I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad / And cut the braces off your legs / And we'll bury them tonight in the cornfield"

Tom Waits is a master at evoking the melancholy of a long-ago past, and his autobiographical ballad"Kentucky Avenue," about a childhood friend with polio, is one of the most devastating songs in Waits catalog.

Unchained Melody (1965)

"Time goes by so slowly / And time can do so much / Are you still mine?"

You don't have to picture the ghost of Patrick Swayze making pottery with Demi Moore to feel something when you hear the Righteous Brothers' gorgeous "Unchained Melody." Sung by Bobby Hatfield (both he and Bill Medley wanted to sing it solo, so they tossed a coin and Hatfield won), this "melody" cuts deep.

The River (1980)

"Now those memories come back to haunt me / They haunt me like a curse / Is a dream a lie if it don't come true / Or is it something worse"

Bruce Springsteen's elegiac ballad "The River"contrasts youthful dreams with the disappointment and everyday struggle of a working man. Just listen to that harmonica wail and try to maintain dry tear ducts!

Hurt (2002)

"I hurt myself today / To see if I still feel"

Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is an unlikely cover of a Nine Inch Nails single, but with his trademark baritone growl, the country legend transforms the song and makes it his own. Oh, did we mention it tears you apart from the inside?

Everybody Hurts (1992)

"If you're on your own in this life / The days and nights are long"

R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" drags you down from its opening notes and only gets sadder from there. Written primarily by drummer Bill Berry (though the entire band shares credit), the song conveys a straightforward message about loneliness and isolation—one that, as the title suggests, everybody can relate to.

Cat’s In the Cradle (1974)

"'When you coming home, Dad?' / 'I don't know when / But we'll get together then ...'"

Harry Chapin's only No.1 hit, "Cat's in the Cradle"sets a somewhat distant father-son relationship against the passage of time. Chapin acknowledged that the lyrics refer in part to his relationship with his own son. "Frankly," he said, "this song scares me to death."

Manu Čao

 

 

Manu Čao (šp. Manu Chao), pravo ime Hose-Manuel Tomas Artur Čao (šp. Jose-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao; Pariz, 21. jun 1961) je francuski muzičar španskog porekla.

 

Biografija

Otac mu je pisac i novinar Ramon Čao iz Vilalbe u Galiciji, a majka Felisa Ortega je baskijskog porekla nz grada Bilbaa u Baskiji. Preselili su se u Francusku u vreme diktature Fransiska Franka, budući da je njegov deda bio osuđen na smrt.^[1] Nedugo posle Manuovog rođenja, porodica se preselila u predgrađe Pariza, te je veći deo detinjstva proveo u Bulonj Bijankuru i Sevru. Odrastajući bio je u dodiru sa velikim brojem umetnika i intelektualaca, od kojih su mnogi bili poznanici njegovog oca.^[2] Svoja iskustva iz detinjstva Čao navodi kao inspiraciju za neke od njegovih pesama.^[3]

Bio je poznat u pariskoj alternativnoj muzičkoj sceni kao član bendova Hot Pants i Los Carayos. 1987. godine je zajedno sa svojim bratom Antoanom formirao sastav Mano Negra. Do svog raspada 1995. godina, bend je bio poznat u Francuskoj i pravio je turneje po Južnoj Americi.

Posle raspada, Manu Čao je otišao u Srednju Ameriku, gde je naredne četiri godine proveo putujući po planinskim gudurama, naoružan akustičnom gitarom i četvorokanalnim rekorderom. Usledio je prvi solo projekat Clandestino (1998), minimalistički sastavljen od gitara, udaraljki i dečjih instrumenata. Sa pesmom Welcome To Tijuana uspeo je da napravi pravu veselo-ironičnu himnu o dobro poznatom gradiću na meksičkoj granici sa SAD, gde caruju šverc i laka uživanja (Welcome to Tijuana / Tequilla, sexo, marijuana...). Sa naglaskom na teme kao što su ilegalna imigracija i državna represija, albumom je provejavao oštar društveno-politički komentar uperen u pravcu kapitalističke eksploatacije Trećeg sveta. Na albumu Próxima Estación: Esperanza(2001), potencirajući rege zvuk, Manu Čao između ostalog uključuje i jedan recitativ na ruskom. Album je dobio nagradu londonskog Bi-Bi-Sija za najbolji album svetske muzike.

Manu Čao peva na francuskom, španskom, galicijskom, arapskom, engleskom, portugalskom i volof jeziku. Često koristi više jezika u istoj pesmi.

Manu Čao je nesumnjivo autentična pojava na svetskoj muzičkoj sceni. Usled svog mešanog porekla, a pre svega svojom muzikom, postao je jedan od najupečatljivijih reprezenata globalnog multikulturalnog društva, i istovremeno jedan od najburnijih kritičara procesa ekonomske globalizacije. Njegova retorika se kreće u pojednostavljenim okvirima romantičnih anarho tendencija, na tragu blage ideološke paranoje: "Ono što moramo da uradimo jeste da kažemo 'Ne' ovakvom svetu čiji dalji razvoj vodi u samouništenje."

Ipak, Manu Čao se, paralelno sa prodiranjem na tržište SAD, upleo u onu vrstu kontradikcije koja se javlja kod svih izvođača koji se bore protiv korporativnog kapitalizma - objavljivanjem albuma pod okriljem takvih multinacionalnih korporacija kakve su Virgin i EMI, donekle se trivijalizovao socijalni sadržaj njegove muzike, uz bojazan da izgubi svoj antiglobalizacijski potencijal.
