Dr Mark Harwood Biography

his works

Mark Harwood graduated from the University of Sydney where his postgraduate studies focused on radiotelescopes and computer techniques for antenna design and measurement.

Mark Harwood has been working as a creationist in Austrailia for the past 30 years. He worked in the Austrailian telecommunication industry, specializing in satellite communication. In the 1980S, he helped developing AUSSAT, Austrailia's first domestic satellite system that was first launched in 1985. Mark Harwood also designed the antennas and beams on the satellites and the communication system on spacecrafts.

Mark is now working in Optus which is an Australia's leading telecommunicational company that serves more than six million customers each day. The company provides a broad range of communications services including mobile, national and long distance services, local telephone, international telephone, business network services, internet and satellite services and subscription television. In 2001, SingTel became the parent company of Optus, paving the way for Optus to become a strong and strategic telecommunications player within the Asia-Pacific region.

conflicting in faith

During his university years, Mark believed that God created through the processes of theistic evolution. In 1979, he was dealing with the historical truth of Genesis and realized that the early chapters of Genesis were based on the Christian faith. His later journey of investigation convinced him of the theological and scientific basis of the Genesis account of creation.

Dr Mark Harwood is well known internationally in the commercial communications satellite field, but he says that there has never been any conflict between his beliefs as a creationist and his scientific understanding of how the real world works. He comments, ‘I’ve had a few verbal jousts with some colleagues, but when it comes to discussing science and the Bible I am always able to answer them logically. I’ve found that once this line of discussion has been thoroughly explored, it is then easier to move to issues of faith, and belief that Jesus is the Son of God.’

Raymond Damadian

Постављена слика

Raymond V. Damadian was born in 1936 in Melville, New York. He entered the University of Wisconsin in at 16, earning his BS in mathematics in 1956. He then earned his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1960. After one year's residency at Kings County Hospital in New York, he served as a Fellow first in Nephrology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, then in Biophysics at Harvard. He also studied Physiological Chemistry at the School of Aerospace Medicine. Finally, Dr Damadian joined the faculty of the State University of New York, becoming the associate professor of biophysics and internal medicine.

Dr Damadian is a strong Christian, and firm believer in Creation. In an interview with Creation magazine, he said that “acceptance of the unqualified Word of God ‘has been the foundation for Western civilization since the printing of the Gutenberg Bible in the fifteenth century[1].

Damadian's US Patent filed 17 March 1972.

Damadian's US Patent filed 17 March 1972.

In 1969, Dr Damadian began experimenting with a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. He discovered that tumors responded differently to the machine than did normal, healthy tissue. In 1971 he published his findings in the journal Science, and began working on a machine large enough to scan a human body. Unfortunately, so did many of his competitors. Six exhausting years later, Dr Damadian’s team made the first successful human scan. Over the next years, Dr Damadian filed several lawsuits against international companies who were implementing his patented ideas for their own profit; some he won, others he lost.

In 1997, the United States Supreme Court affirmed that Damadian’s research was the basis for the modern Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine (MRI). However, the Nobel Prize was awarded to Paul Lauterbur and Sir Peter Mansfield in 2003 for their later work on the MRI. Many of Damadian's supporters feel that he was ignored because of his stance as a young earth creationist. An admission of this potential act of discrimination can be found in the December 2003 issue of Smithsonian Magazine (quote below).

But it is difficult not to at least consider another explanation: that scientists on the assembly or in other positions of influence could not abide Damadian’s staunch support for "creationist science." Damadian is a firm believer in a literal translation of the Bible: he has no doubt that the earth was created by God during a six-day stretch about 6,000 years ago. Damadian has also served as a technical adviser to the Institute for Creation Research, which rejects the standard model of evolution."The non-biblical account would have us believe that all life originated from a single common ancestor—a slime mold—and give or take a billion years, we’re expected to believe that the descendants of this slime mold climbed out of the ocean and stood up and started giving lectures," Damadian says. "Do the math on that. The sheer statistics of that violate any sense of reality." Smithsonian Magazine. December 2003. [2]

Skeptics, on the otherhand, argue that the award was for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging, an aspect Damadian did not develop (though without his previous research, there would be no way to get an image).

Ево како пролазе у научном свету они који се `дрзну` да не верују у ТЕ:

The Scientific American Affair

Постављена слика

In 1989, the editor of Scientific American magazine called and asked if I would like to write "The Amateur Scientist" column. A year earlier I had sent a lengthy proposal to write the column.

"The Amateur Scientist" was a well known column about do-it-yourself science projects, and I stopped all work and a field trip to fly to New York to meet the editor and his staff.

During a meeting in his office, the editor expressed excitement over various scientific and electronic devices that I had brought to show him. He repeatedly stated, "We should have hired you years ago!" He called in the editorial staff and asked me to show them the instruments and devices that I had brought.

Later, the editor frowned when I told him I had once written an article for a Christian magazine about how to organize long-distance :) trips for teenagers. He then asked if I believed in Darwinian evolution. I replied that I did not. Later two junior editors quizzed me about my beliefs concerning "right to life" and whether or not I read the Bible. Two senior editors supported me for the column.

Scientific American eventually published three of my columns. Unfortunately, the editor refused to publish more, because he was concerned that my personal beliefs would cause the magazine to experience what he described as "a public relations nightmare."

His dream came true when I mentioned how I lost the column to a newspaper reporter I knew. After the reporter's story was prominently featured in a Houston newspaper, reporters called from The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. A reporter for The New York Times arrived at my office for an interview. After articles appeared in these newspapers, dozens of magazines and newspapers called. So did many radio and TV stations. For around six weeks it was virtually impossible to work due to the endless media interviews.

Since 1990 numerous inquiries have arrived from individuals, scholars and the media about my brief tenure as writer of "The Amateur Scientist" column for Scientific American magazine. I will eventually relate the experience in detail in a scholarly article or a book and would prefer to wait until then to tell the full story. However, many inaccurate accounts about the affair have been published on the web, and this has made it necessary to provide some factual information about what occurred.

This page is preliminary and will be eventually expanded to include documents and transcripts that will correct erroneous online accounts. This page will also include the full text of the three columns I wrote for "The Amateur Scientist." For now, it seems appropriate to begin with a letter from the chair of the Committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Russell Humphreys

Постављена слика

Dr. D. Russell Humphreys was awarded his Ph.D. in physics from Louisiana State University in 1972, by which time he was a fully convinced creationist. For the next 6 years he worked in the High Voltage Laboratory of General Electric Company, designing and inventing equipment and researching high-voltage phenomena. While there, he received a U.S. patent and one of Industrial Research Magazine’s IR-100 awards.

Beginning in 1979 he worked for Sandia National Laboratories (New Mexico) in nuclear physics, geophysics, pulsed-power research, and theoretical atomic and nuclear physics. In 1985, he began working with Sandia’s ‘Particle Beam Fusion Project’, and was co-inventor of special laser-triggered ‘Rimfire’ high-voltage switches, now coming into wider use. The last few years at Sandia had seen greater emphasis on theoretical nuclear physics and radiation hydrodynamics in an effort to help produce the world’s first lab-scale thermonuclear fusion. Besides gaining another U.S. patent, Dr. Humphreys has been given two awards from Sandia, including an Award for Excellence for contributions to light ion-fusion target theory.

Dr. Humphreys has retired from Sandia and now works with the Institute for Creation Research. He has published some 20 papers in secular scientific journals, as well as many creationist technical papers.
