SEOUL, Aug 2 (Reuters) - South Korea's central bank bought 25 tonnes of gold over the past two months in its first purchase in more than a decade, saying the time was ripe to boost its gold holding, but markets barely moved on the news.

A brittle global economic recovery and precarious debt situations in the United States and Europe have boosted the safe-haven appeal of gold, lifting bullion to a series of record highs in July, as investors and central banks chased prices higher.

The central bank of Asia's fourth-largest economy said that, with prices hovering near historic highs, gold looked less lucrative as an investment but it was the right time to buy gold because its foreign reserves had risen above $300 billion.

News of the Bank of Korea's purchase barely moved spot gold which was steady at $1,617.89 an ounce by 2236 GMT, but analysts said it was supportive of prices. Gold hit a record high of $1,632.30 on Friday.

Europe's Banks Retreat

LONDON—Banks across Europe are retrenching in efforts to shield themselves from the continent's financial crisis and an increasingly bleak international economic outlook.

Some banks are scrambling to dump government bonds and cut credit lines in southern Europe's economic laggards, while others are stockpiling cash. They are also firing thousands of workers and warning about a growing number of red flags they see among customers.

On Tuesday, U.K. banking giant Barclays PLC became the latest in a string of major European lenders to sound a cautious note, reporting first-half profit that tumbled 38% from last year.

Danasnji dan je zapoceo izuzetno lose. Berze Nato zemalja su bili sve do jedne "zelene", u plusu, medjutim posle rucka a radi bolje probave trziste se pobrinulo da nase prijatelje ne muci zgaravica.

Worries about the state of the economy in the U.S. and around the world slammed stocks on Thursday, pushing the Dow down 350 points. Gold and bonds soared as investors sought a safe place to park their money.

The Dow Jones industrials average slid about 3 percent. The broader S&P 500 index was down 10 percent from its May high, putting it in correction territory. The market's so-called "fear index," the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), jumped 12.8 percent to 26.37, the highest since March.
