Sta Zvonko kazes, nece profitirati?

By Alexander Kolyandr

MOSCOW–As Russian officials attack the U.S. over claims Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces used chemical weapons, the country’s media have got themselves in a tangle over a false report that neatly fitted the government’s line.

Russian state agency ITAR-TASS published a report from Cairo Wednesday quoting a top United Nations official as saying it was Syrian rebels, not government forces, that used poison gas on Aug. 21. ITAR-TASS attributed quotes from Carla Del Ponte, a member of the UN’s commission looking into alleged gas attacks, to a Syrian news portal, which in turn was citing an interview on Swiss TV.

She was quoted as saying: “Evidence provided by eyewitnesses and people who suffered from a poisonous gas attack in the Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus obviously points to the fact that the neuro-paralytic gas sarin was used there by the paramilitaries of Syria’s irreconcilable opposition.”

The report was promptly matched by leading Russian news agency Interfax, this time from Beirut. It was quickly picked up by state-controlled TV and radio stations. The news appeared on almost every Russian news outlet, occupying lead spots on newspaper websites.

Russian politicians seized on the quote, which appeared to back up Russian government claims that rebels could have been responsible for the attack. Alexey Pushkov, a senior lawmaker from President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, accused Western press of deliberately ignoring Carla Del Ponte’s statement because it destroyed the basis for a military strike.

One problem: There was no such statement.

Ms. Del Ponte did say something similar—but not quite as stark—back in May: “Investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals and, according to their report of last week which I have seen, there are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated,” she told Swiss TV, referring to another alleged attack.

That story appears to have passed to ITAR-TASS via the BBC, The Washington Times and Assyrian International News Agency’s website, with the timing and wording changed.

By the end of Wednesday, a UN spokesman had told BBC Russian Service that Ms. Del Ponte didn’t say anything about the Aug. 21 attack, and that the members of the commission haven’t spoken publicly since June 4.

ITAR-TASS and Interfax reported the UN’s denial of the quote, but didn’t publish a correction. ITAR-TASS’s desk editor said the agency “took the reporter’s dispatch at face value” and the editors didn’t check it.

An Interfax spokesman blamed the agency’s stringer in Beirut for the mistake, adding that the editors who didn’t pick up the error have been fined and the contributor fired.

Very few private news outlets published corrections. The report could no longer be found on most state media websites Thursday, and nor could corrections.

Lawmaker Mr. Pushkov didn’t reply to written requests to comment on his statement.

Syrians: “Why Aren’t You Doing Anything?”
Many Syrians I’ve talked to expect it’ll be years before President Bashar Al Assad’s regime is toppled; I tend to agree.

By ZACK BADDORF

GAZIANTEP, TURKEY (TRNS) — I’ve only been reporting on Syria for a few weeks now, but already I feel like I’m radicalized.

Every day, Syrians ask me, “Why aren’t you doing anything? What more must happen? How many more must die?”

I ask myself the same questions and I don’t mind admitting it: I’m disgusted by American inaction.

Over the past decade, I’ve reported from other conflict and post-conflict nations before, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, the West Bank, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and Burma. But this one has really hit home for me. With more than 100,000 Syrians dead, including by chemical weapons attacks, our lack of a cohesive policy on how to help the Syrian people reach peace is inhuman.

The conflict has been going on for more than two years and we’ve effectively done nothing. It’s like we’re shielding our eyes and pretending it’s not happening. The chemical weapons attacks in Damascus should be a wake-up call – a call to action.

Yesterday, I met up with a Syrian refugee who was arrested and tortured by the regime merely for protesting. This man, who needs to maintain anonymity because he still has family inside Syria, was jailed four times, most recently for eight months, by the military. They were transferring him around from jail to jail.

At one point, they put him in a cell the size of a small bathroom. It would have been a tight fit with three people, but, for two days, the 50-year-old man was in there with eight other Syrian prisoners.

There were no windows – just a vent. The ventilation system stopped functioning. Slowly, he and the others started suffocating. He started to see things and hear the voices of his children. They pounded on the door, to no avail. By the end of the two days in that cell, seven of the other inmates were dead.

The guards transferred him to a larger cell – about 25 feet by 25 feet. There, he was one of 105 prisoners. Enduring stifling heat and noxious smells, they had no room to sit; space was so tight that they had to remain standing. In shifts, the men folded their bodies into small balls in order to get some sleep.

Many times, this former prisoner said, he’d wake up and feel the body of the person next to him had gone “very cold.” Inmates would die overnight as a lack of starvation and disease. Those still alive would knock on the door and tell the guards. The military men incinerated the bodies, dumped them into mass graves, dropped them into a river, or just threw them onto the street, I was told.

This refugee himself started out weighing about 210 pounds; when released, he weighed 120. “I was like a ghost,” he told me in Gaziantep, Turkey, just about an hour from the Syrian border.

Of course, the soldiers also tortured him. Because he was older, they only severely beat him with wooden and plastic sticks. For the younger men, the guards attached wires to other Syrians and electrocuted them. They scalded the men all over their bodies with hot metal or “just cigarettes,” he said. “Many, many people” died under this torture.

For those Syrians who have fled to Turkey to escape, they are working around the clock to help their people. It’s like they’ve never left the country. Their lives are totally dominated by what’s happening across the border.

Today, I met up with some young Syrian doctors who are opening a new rehabilitation center in Gaziantep. One of their first patients is a young woman, Salwa Makresh. She was shot in the back by a regime sniper when she was 17 years old, going home from work.

I asked her, “Why would they want to shoot you?”

“For fun,” she replied softly in Arabic.

Salwa is paralyzed from the waist down now and is getting physiotherapy from the Syrian doctors, who are also refugees. She misses her home of Aleppo. “It’s my country. My memories, everything is there,” she told me. This young woman just wants to go home – when it’s safe.

But when will this conflict end?

I doubt it’ll be anytime soon, unless the United States actually steps up and leads. Many Syrians I’ve talked to expect it’ll be years before President Bashar Al Assad’s regime is toppled; I tend to agree.

The morning after the chemical weapons attacks in Damascus, I crossed into Syria for a day to speak to people in the ramshackle Bab al Salameh Internally Displaced Persons Camp. I spoke to as many Syrians as I could – a mother of five, a cook, a former salesman, camp administrators, an FSA soldier, a young barber, among others.

They all had the same question for Americans: “What are you waiting for?”

I had no answer.
